Edition 2021

The Pontifical University of John Paul II in Cracow Institute of Family Studies

University of Debrecen
Faculty of Education for Children and Special Educational Needs

Main topics:

  1. Education in the family
  2. Family in the educational system
  3. Social aspects of education

We are pleased to invite you to attend the conference devoted to family and education. Despite numerous crises which have been affecting the family, it still remains the basic educational environment. As a social group, it is also part of the national educational system which has been undergoing dynamic changes. This dependence shows considerable educational potential which may offer children, teenagers, adults and the oldest family members opportunities for development.
We are aware of deficiencies and obstacles in the process of education in the family. We notice great needs in the social dimension of education. Therefore, it is crucially important to organise academic meetings and have discussions on the issue. In May 2020 one of such meetings will be held at the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Cracow.
The patron of our university frequently expressed his views on the family. The issue of education was also important to him. We are invited to follow his example of openness and readiness to hold dialogue on these issues. His thought still inspires us to pursue research at our university. However, without your participation our pursuits will not be fully satisfying. Hence, we very much hope that our sessions held at the foot of the Wawel Hill will give valuable insights into a widely understood process of education implemented in cooperation with families and schools as well as offer effective solutions.
Our discourse will acquire a special significance thanks to guests who will represent foreign academic centres. The exchange of experiences will enable us to more fully present the issues which are vitally important for the future of the family and education in the countries of the European Union.
We propose three areas of research and discussion:

  1. Education in the family.
This area comprises a widely understood process of upbringing and education in the family environment. It is important to reflect on its determinants and the process itself, with regard to the specifics of each society. The analysis of the methodology of family upbringing is required. The other area which needs to be analysed is the process of self-education.
  2. Family in the educational system.
Placing family upbringing in the educational system offers numerous opportunities for cooperation aimed at the well-being of the family and the country. Moreover, it is of great importance to reflect on the reasons for difficulties arising at the interface between the family and the system. It is important to reflect on the openness of the family to school education as well as on the readiness and efficiency of the educational system in terms of support offered to the family.
  3. Social aspects of education.
They embrace issues related to the process of education in the family and at school as well as the system of support in these dimensions of education. It is necessary to analyse the role of institutions which support and complement the educational process at home and at school. Research will make it possible to identify strengths and weaknesses of the social aspects of education.
